Inbuilt wins contract to provide sustainability advice to Energy Saving Trust housing clients
20 January 2009
Inbuilt has been appointed by the Energy Saving Trust to provide sustainability strategy, design and technical services to housebuilders and social housing developers participating in the Newbuild Outreach Programme.
Mat Colmer, Programme Development Manager for Housing at the Energy Saving Trust, said:
"This service is designed to help public and private sector developers who are committed to building homes to high standards of energy performance. We are offering technical and evaluation support throughout all the design and construction stages, as well as help in dealing with planning authorities and marketing energy efficient homes.
"Housebuilders need easily accessible advice on low carbon and passive design solutions including Passivhaus, technical issues such as when and how to use natural systems or renewable energy technologies, and information on monitoring and post-occupancy evaluation. Inbuilt will help us to provide this assistance so that our housebuilding clients can make well-informed sustainability choices. We were impressed by Inbuilt‟s innovative approach and its commitment to integrated solutions that cover all aspects of sustainability."
Nick Jones, associate director at Inbuilt, is leading the team of designers and technical specialists that will work with the Energy Saving Trust. He said:
"The Newbuild Outreach Programme is an ideal solution for small and medium sized housing developers who need access to tailored advice and expertise to help guarantee genuine sustainability.
"Most housebuilders and housing associations have a broad plan of how they are going to meet the Government's zero carbon target and the intermediate stages planned for the 2010 and 2013 Building Regulations. The current housing market and industry downturn provides a useful opportunity to spend some time exploring options in more detail and preparing for the changes ahead.
"However, there is clearly a risk that some housebuilders are seizing the first technical solution they can afford, rather than taking the long-term view or considering the broader sustainability implications of their decisions. This could lead them into technical cul-de-sacs which cost a fortune to back out of later on.
"We are delighted to have the opportunity to work with the Energy Saving Trust and its clients to avoid that scenario. We will be working to achieve successful and cost-effective outcomes that will see us through the recession and maintain the sustainability lead of the new homes industry."
