Inbuilt and Ecofirst Consult to advise the Gladedale Consortium on Carbon Challenge bid

25 February 2008

Inbuilt and Ecofirst Consult have been chosen to provide sustainability advice to the Gladedale Consortium as part of its bid to build a zero carbon community in Peterborough.

The consultancies will help Gladedale decide the overall energy strategy for the redevelopment of Peterborough’s South Bank (Phase 1), the second site allocated by English Partnerships for its Carbon Challenge.

The site is expected to deliver 450 homes, all specified to the highest level (Level 6) of the Code for Sustainable Homes.

Commenting on the project, Dr David Strong, chief executive of Inbuilt, said:
“We are pleased to be part of a project that will help in the billion-pound transformation of Peterborough, and that will allow us to showcase the best low-energy, low-cost ways to heat, cool, ventilate and illuminate the next generation of new homes.

“Inbuilt’s advice to the Gladedale Consortium will focus on site-wide heat and power options, including renewable technologies. We are looking to create substantial savings in the cost of the buildings’ fabric and services through climate-responsive design principles and designing out unnecessary technical complexity. We will also be advising on the wider community aspects of sustainable new developments.”

Paul Lemar, land and planning director for Gladedale Special Projects Division, said:
“The Carbon Challenge provides us with an opportunity to explore the potential of achieving zero carbon living in an economically viable manner prior to it becoming mandatory. This initiative presents us with an opportunity to learn and develop best practice and we are delighted to be working with Inbuilt.

“It would be wonderful to win the Carbon Challenge of course, but no matter the
outcome, the entire Gladedale team will benefit greatly from the experience and
the knowledge we have gleaned will be shared across the group.”

The Gladedale Consortium, which was shortlisted together with five other companies, will be submitting its bid in April, and English Partnerships will announce the winner in the summer.
