AN ENERGY REVIEW OF AN ICONIC BUILDING
The Wellcome Trust, the UK’s largest medical research charity, appointed Inbuilt to undertake an energy review of its iconic 28,000m2 10-storey headquarters building at 215 Euston Road, London.
The building was designed by Sir Michael Hopkins to achieve very high levels of energy efficiency, and was opened by Her Majesty the Queen in 2004. Our role was to review the actual in-use energy performance and identify any possible opportunities for operational improvement.
We reviewed the historic energy usage and conducted a survey of lighting, heating, cooling, air handling and the configuration of the building management system. We also reviewed the opportunities for the incorporation of low and zero carbon technologies. Our recommendations included optimising the chilled water temperature, adding evaporative meshes to dry air coolers, and making greater use of free cooling.
We recommended modifying the airflow rate of the ventilation system, while maintaining occupant comfort, together with fine-tuning the configuration of the building management system to give low or no cost improvements to energy efficiency. The Wellcome Trust is currently implementing many of our recommendations.
"Even though 215 Euston Road had been assessed as Excellent under BREEAM, it was important for the Trust not only to validate the original design but also to enhance the building’s green credentials wherever possible. We were pleased to work with Inbuilt to identify and evaluate the opportunities."
Charles Griffin, Head of Facilities Management (London), Wellcome Trust
