Cambridge Regional College
A MODERN SUSTAINABILITY STRATEGY

Inbuilt worked with Bond Bryan architects to develop a concept scheme for the International Climate Exchange building, part of the Cambridge Regional College and the SmartLIFE campus.

Our brief was to develop an energy strategy that incorporated 40% renewables, to provide feasibility guidance on achieving BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ and also to assess the feasibility of achieving net-zero embodied carbon in the construction of the building.

This was one of Inbuilt’s first projects to make use of i-BERT, our proprietary software that helps clients with their renewable energy choices and obligations.

We provided the client with three technical solutions of low and zero carbon combinations for this complex site, including explaining the major design considerations for each and their capital and ongoing operational costs.

We carried out a BREEAM pre-assessment for the scheme, and advised on a range of options to offset embodied energy – for example, through balancing the carbon negative materials of concrete, steel and glass by using carbon positive materials such as timber, rammed earth and Hempcrete.

"By consulting with us early and developing a good understanding of our aspirations, Inbuilt brought obvious value to the College’s design team by developing an up-front and robust sustainability strategy.”
Chris Lang, Director of Finance and Resources, Cambridge Regional College
