Inbuilt's guiding
PRINCIPLES
The Natural Step
Inbuilt has adapted and applied the scientifically-proven
principles of The Natural Step to the built environment. From this
we have developed the Inbuilt
Framework for Sustainable Development.
Smart Growth
Our approach to sustainable masterplanning and regeneration is
based upon the tried and tested principles of Smart Growth and new
urbanism.
We advocate the regeneration and growth of our towns and cities
by adopting an approach which is based on:
- Delivering mixed-use developments with a range of housing types
and tenures
- The creation of walkable communities and public transport
infrastructures
- Effective community/stakeholder engagement and
collaboration
- Creating a distinctive and attractive sense of place
- Enabling mixed land use to preserve open space and enhance the
natural environment
Lean Design
We also adopt and endorse the principles of Lean Design, using a
systematic approach to design-out waste and improve efficiency.
Natural Capitalism
All of these
principles can be traced back to Natural Capitalism. This
movement, championed by Amory Lovins at the Rocky Mountain
Institute, shows how it is possible to create a vital
economy that uses radically less material and
energy. Such an economy can free up resources,
reduce taxes on personal income, increase per-capita spending on
social ills (while simultaneously reducing those ills), and begin
to restore the damaged environment.
Natural
Capitalism shows us there is another way to reconcile economic
growth with a genuinely sustainable future. It's a concept that
inspires and informs everyone at Inbuilt and that we find time
and again can be applied with elegant simplicity to the built
environment.
